Kia ora Kevinans and Supporters of the College

There is a definite autumnal look to the College grounds we return this week for term two. Over the holidays the majestic oaks have had a prune, the administration block roof and art quadrangle walls have been painted and the equestrian arena landscaping has been completed. Thank you to our support staff for your dedication and hard work.

This week has had an ANZAC focus, with details and images included later in the blog. Tomorrow, our College Pipers are playing at the Dawn Service and our Prefects will lay a wreath at the 10.30am service at the cenotaph. I would encourage you to support these events and wish everyone a happy and reflective ANZAC holiday.

Looking forward to next week, Thursday is our College Open Day. Please feel free to invite any prospective students and parents to our open afternoon and evening.

Finally, keep Mr Ryan in your prayers as he takes sabbatical leave. We wish him every success with his educational observations and safe travel.

May God bless you
Paul Olsen, Principal

Cross Country 2015

The weather was perfect for cross country running yesterday afternoon.  With an alteration to the circuit from last year which saw students taking on the gully above the playing fields, it was certainly a challenge.  Well done to all of the students who gave it their all and crossed the finishing line.

Y12 PE Bike Trip 2015

The weather was somewhat unpredictable in Central Otago as our Y12 PE students took to their bikes for their annual bike trip.  On Sunday they cycled from Hyde to Wedderburn before tackling the Nasby Forest on Monday.  Tuesday saw them in the hills behind the famous clock in Alexandra.  They were accompanied by Miss Casey, Mr Collins, Mrs Kitto and Mr Dixon and had lots of fun on this amazing outdoor experience.  They were back at school, just in time for the cross country yesterday!

Sacramental Invitation

Sacramental Invitation

All students are encouraged and supported to engage actively in the Catholic nature of the College.

An open invitation is extended to any SKC parents and students from non-Catholic backgrounds who might wish to engage in the Colleges ‘Sacramental Programme’. The four sacraments of the Holy Catholic Church initiated at St. Kevin’s are: Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist (Holy Communion) and Confirmation. Equally, Catholic students who have not yet received any or all of these sacraments are also urged to participate in the programme.

Making a commitment to the Catholic faith allows individuals to take a more full part in religious ceremonies such as weekly Masses and the receiving of Eucharist at Holy Communion time. If students and or parents wish to participate in this invitation or would simply like to know more about the Colleges Sacramental programme, please contact the Director of Religious Studies Mr. Tony Mullally (tmullally@stkevins.school.nz) ph 03 437 1665 (Extn 738) or the school Office.

Field of Remembrance

Today the College gathered beside the Magee Memorial Lawn to mark the laying of our Field of Remembrance.  Mr Olsen gave an insight into the Field before the flag was lowered and thirty senior students read each of the names acknowledged on the thirty crosses in the Field.  The people named on the crosses in our Field came from our region but also include Sergeant David Gallaher, captain of the All Blacks, Staff Nurse Lorna Rattray, and Private Basil Mercer who was just 17 when he was killed.  Following a minutes silence Head Boy Brady Kingan read The Ode, after which the flag was once again raised, accompanied by College piper Natalie Preston.  The Field will remain on the Magee Memorial Lawn for the next fortnight.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Principal's Comment

Kia Ora Kevinian's and Supporters

With an early Easter, term one has been a short nine week academic, sporting and cultural sprint. All the regular College events have been jam packed into what has been an eventful and productive term. As I reflect on the certificates and achievements acknowledged and presented at assembly throughout the term, I am reminded of the talent of our student body. This is fostered through hard work and dedication to training, preparation and good coaching.  In a small College community such as ours, good will and volunteer contributions are the backbone of of a strong and successful co-curricular programme. Thank you to our staff, student leaders, caregiver helpers and the Board of Trustees for the valuable contribution of time, energy and expertise.

As today is the last day of term, we finish school slightly earlier in order to have our first parent teacher meetings. These are an opportunity to raise and resolve any issues that may be developing. With the newly implemented system for Attitude to Learning (previously called fortnightly indicators) just coming on-line, it is all the more important for caregiver's to touch base with staff. If you feel you would like longer to talk, feel free to make an appointment at the start of term two for a meeting or schedule a follow up phone call.

Last weekend, the College played host to the Catholic Secondary School Sports Tournament. This annual event involves 550 students from Roncalli, Kavanagh, Verdon, St Peter's and St Kevin's. It is designed to provide games as an introduction to the winter sports season. The various sporting codes took the the opportunity to explore combinations and tactics for the upcoming season and I was pleased to see plenty of emerging talent. Thank you to Sandra Kitto and Janelle Casey who so ably organised the event. I am particularly grateful to the staff and supporters who gave up their Sunday to help run the event which I am proud to say St Kevin's College won.

Finally, as we head off for the holidays, I wish everyone safe travel and a happy and holy Easter.

May God bless you this Easter season
Paul Olsen, Principal

Easter Liturgy 2015

The Holy Thursday Liturgy was held in the Chapel on Wednesday instead of normal Assembly. The Liturgy focused student’s attention to the true meaning of the Easter celebrations – the Death & Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. The centre piece for the Liturgy was the Y13 Student Leaders re-enactment of the Passover Meal, the last meal Jesus shared with his Apostles before Jesus execution on the cross. Our Catholic community are familiar with this occasion known more commonly as the Last Supper. While the drama portrayed the prophetic words of Jesus to his Apostle a short video followed showing the some of the suffering Jesus endured for mankind’s sins. Prayers were read by Student Leaders and a thoughtful rendition of ‘Awesome God’ was sung by the whole school. Mr Olsen then explained the difference between a crucifix and a cross while the Liturgy concluded with Father Wayne giving his Easter Blessing and wishes to all present.

Taieri District Pony Club Event

The St Kevin's College Equestrian team competed at the Taieri District Pony Club Event in the weekend and were unlucky to miss the Turn Out Trophy for the second year in a row by a half point.  For a small team, the girls certainly hold their own.  Thank you to Tracy Middlemiss, Mark Gibbons and Katrina Hurley Gibbons for accompanying the team.  Well done!

CST Champions

With a total of 50 points the Bishop Boyle Trophy was presented by the Mayor, Mr Gary Kircher, to Sydney Telfer and Brady Kingan on behalf of the College, who finished first above Kavanagh on 46 and then Roncalli on 38 points.  There is not doubting the success of a great two days of sport and thanks must be given to all of our volunteers who worked alongside Sandra Kitto and Janelle Casey to ensure the smooth running of events.  However, to once again have the name of St Kevin's College etched onto the winning trophy is just reward for our teams and volunteers alike.  Congratulations Kevinians!
