Principal's Comment

Kia ora Kevinian's and supporters of the College

The infectious buzz of pre-ball excitement is mixed with end of term anticipation as we prepare for the Waitaki Inter-school and the school Formal Ball. Senior students have been hard at work practicing their dancing in the hostel dining room during lunch times. I am impressed to see the rapid evolution from tentative stomping to more elegant and graceful moves. The 1920's themed decorations are coming along well with Home & School support. Thank you to the many parents and Home & School helpers for the mammoth contribution that you are making to a successful evening. I look forward to the culmination on Saturday evening and wish all involved, the very best for an outstanding event.

Earlier in the week students participated in several sporting fixtures. The Mercy Cup was held in Christchurch and we had a strong contingent of our girls attending. Congratulations to all the teams for representing the College so positively. Fair play and tenacity are hall marks of St Kevin's teams and we were proud to see that these teams continued this tradition. Our girls and boys basketball teams also competed in the Aoraki Regional Secondary School Competition earlier in the week. Although they did not manage a podium place, they were competitive and this reflects the current strength of basketball in the College.

As we near the end of term, staff are currently preparing student reports for the mail out. Even though term two has been a shorter 9 week block, we need to remind ourselves that over half the academic year has passed. If caregivers have concerns, now is the time to raise them with deans so that together we can support students to make the most of the remaining time and ensure a purposeful start to the new term.

This week at assembly I highlighted the issue of students with concussion returning to contact sport too rapidly. Can I encourage caregivers and coaches to take a conservative approach to treatment. Please allow plenty of time for healing to take place before returning to contact sport and if a concussion is suspected, stop the player from continuing the game. We all want to be active and be involved, however there is a real cost to developing brains that are repeatedly damaged through concussion. By identifying the issue and educating ourselves, we become part of the support network that limits the risk for our students.

Finally, please keep Mrs Burton's father, in our prayers as he is recovering from illness.

May God bless you all.
Paul Olsen, Principal

Georgia Blair and Jessica Fraser are proving top shots following a successful weekend of shooting at the Dunedin Gun Club for an intercollegiate competition.  Jessica took first place in the Ladies Skeet, Ladies High Gun, Ladies Single Rise and Ladies Single Barrel, as well as second place for the Ladies Points Score.  Not to be outdone, Georgia placed first in the Skeet, third in the Single Rise and third overall.  The medal haul looks set to grow as they head to Timaru this coming weekend.  Congratulations girls!

Weekend Sporting Results

Thank you to James at the Oamaru Mail for this shot from Saturday
Grade standings were on the line for many this past weekend with the netball teams facing up to their rivals on the Promotion/Relegation Day.  Senior Red and Intermediate A had losses for their games against some tough competition but Senior A, Senior B, Intermediate B, Junior A, Junior B and Junior Red all took wins for the day.  Girls basketball went down to a very strong Craighead side and the Girls 1st XI Hockey stacked up an impressive 3-0 win over WGHS 2nd's.

Unfortunately the boys had a weekend of losses on the both rugby field and football pitch, so look forward to regaining their winning form ahead of the coming weekend.  A big congratulations to Mr Fowler and the 1st XV who have successfully made it into the Top 8 in the Highlanders Competition, despite a loss to Otago Boys on Saturday.

Sandlewood Trophy

Monique on 'Bruno'
Yesterday the SKC Equestrian team traveled to the Geraldine Pony Club to compete in the Sandlewood Trophy.  Disappointingly one of the horses puled up lame so the team were not in a position to place, but all of the students came away from the day with personal bests.

Caitlin Middlemiss competed for the first time on her new mount "Penny" and had an excellent day in both her dressage and jumping.   Georgia Sillibourne jumped a new height, despite a very stubborn "Bess" and Monique Sage, on "Bruno" had her best ever jumping and dressage results.  Ella Sanderson faced the challenge of competing on another rider's horse and managed the dressage and had a clear jumping round on a horse she had never ridden before.  A big thank you to Tyler Ward from Waitaki Girls High School  for offering Sharne Paton's horse to Ella so she could compete!

A special thank you also, to Richard Shefflebien for the great looking new saddleblankets!

Principal's Comment

Kia ora Kevinians and supporters of the College.

Week seven of the term has provided a rich mix of academic, sporting and cultural endeavors for students.  The highlights have been NCEA assessment, the Southern Catholic Secondary Schools Junior Sports Tournament and the House Drama afternoon.

Regrettably I was unable to go down to Dunedin for the Junior Tournament, but feedback from those attending was very positive. We were placed second overall in the tournament which was an excellent result considering we do not have a full complement of Year 7 and 8 teams. Thank you to Kavanagh College for organizing an extremely well run event. Thank you also to our Head of sport, Miss Casey, our team coaches, staff, parents and supporters.

On Thursday afternoon we held our annual House Drama competition. This was an opportunity for budding thespians to perform in front of the College. We were treated to a menu featuring everything from home grown humour through to the old "Blackadder" and "Monty-Python" classic skits. Congratulations to Treacy House who were placed first, Mark Whittet and Isobel Ryan who were best actors and Kate Wedge and Lucy Tyrell from Treacy who were best directors. Thank you to past pupil, Bridget McNally, who was our guest adjudicator.

The Board of Trustees had their final meeting for the term and accepted with regret the resignation of Mrs L Sutherland from the BOT. This causes a casual vacancy on the Board. The BOT proposes to fill this vacancy by a process of co-options and is now officially calling for expressions of interest from interested parties. If you would like to be considered for co-option, please contact the BOT returning officer, Mrs Sue McErlane at the College office.

As we come to end of term, preparations are well underway for the College Ball, with dancing lessons for seniors being held in the Dining Room this week. Our skilled tutors, Mike and Madeline, are working with the group to have them dancing like stars. We look forward to seeing the results next week and I look forward to meeting many of you at the ball parade.

May God bless you all

Junior Quad Tournament 2014

On Wednesday 100 students from the College and St Joseph's School (Yr 7 & 8) traveled to Dunedin to the Junior Quad Tournament, hosted by Kavanagh College.  They were joined by teams from Verdon College (Invercargill) and St Peter's College (Gore) to compete in netball, rugby, boys and girls football, and boys and girls basketball.  The weather window held for the day and all of the students who competed were complimented by Miss Janelle Casey for their fantastic efforts on the playing fields and courts.  Despite not entering teams into three events at Yr 7 and 8 level, the St Kevin's/St Joseph's team took 2nd place overall, behind the winners Kavanagh College.

A big thank you to Mr Mawson, Mr Seddon, Mrs Evans, Mrs Leong Son, Mr Dixon and all of the student referees and coaches who went down for the day.

Year 11 Retreat

Last week our Year 11 students traveled to Te Runanga o Moeraki for their annual retreat.  It was a beautiful day and after being welcomed with a powhiri they spent the day immersing themselves in the many facts and customs of the local maori culture, including a walk to their local cemetery.  DRS Mr Mullally also took the group through a variety of activities with a focus on "being the best you can"

Weekend Sporting Results

The weather played havoc with several sporting games over the weekend with Boys Football, U16 Rugby and U14.5 Rugby all cancelled due to ground conditions.  Girls Football saw a match up between SKC Blue and SKC Red, and the the Blue team took the honours 9-1.  The 1st XV came away with a win against Dunstan High School thanks to the kicking boot of Brodie Flannery, 6-0 and the netball mix saw wins for Senior A, Intermediate A, Junior A and Junior B, and losses for Senior B, Senior Red, Intermediate B and Junior Red.  Adding a win for the College were the Basketball girls with a great win over WGHS 43-37, although the girls Hockey fell to Shamrock on Saturday afternoon.  Once again a huge thank you to all of our parents, caregivers, teachers and members of the wider College Community who volunteer time and energy as coaches and managers for our sports teams.

Principal's Comment

Kia ora Kevinian's and Supporters of the College

The focus of the week for the middle school has been the Year 11 Retreat. Powhiri protocol, mihi and waiata have been practiced and today the year group are reaping benefits of their hard work. It is always an honour to be welcomed onto the Moeraki Marae and today's noho marae continues to strengthen the links with our local rūnanga. Thank you to Dean -Miss Casey, DRS -Mr Mullully, Maori Studies Adviser- Mrs Plunkett and their team for their valuable contribution.

The Year 12 students participated in the "Love Me Not" programme on Wednesday. Last year the College was part of the first trial delivery and this year the modified and enhanced programme was delivered to students. This has been coordinated by the foundation established by Lesley Elliot after the tragic murder of Sophie, her daughter. Forming appropriate and healthy relationships is an important aspect of personal development and we acknowledge the support of the New Zealand Police, Safer Communities and the Sophie Elliot Trust as we challenge our young people to make healthy choices.

The Career's Team have been very active this week. We had a visit from the Defense Force recruiter who talked to an enthusiastic group of students about opportunities in the forces. This was followed later in the week by Year 10 Work Exploration. Thank you to Mr Hitchcock for leading this valuable initiative. With planning for 2015 in mind, I attended a meeting of local schools and providers to consolidate the VPath course provision for next year. I am pleased to report that we will have an Introduction to Trades and an Introduction to the Service Sector to supplement our Agriculture course. These will be offered through the Oamaru campus of Aoraki Polytechnic.

We wish all our weekend sports teams all the very best and hope that Forsyth Barr Stadium sees a win for the All Blacks as well.

May God bless you

Oamaru Lions Speech Competition 2014

Sydney and Kaleisha with Lions District Governor, Allan Prakash - photo thanks to the Oamaru Mail
Once again the calibre of public speaking at St Kevin's was highlighted when Deputy Head Girl Special Character Kaleisha Jones took first place at the Oamaru Lions Speech Competition, held on Sunday.  Sydney Telfer (Yr12) came in third place.  The art of public speaking is steeped in Kevinian tradition with all students participating at some level during their time at the College.  Kaleisha will take part in the national final which will be held in Tauranga in August.  Well done!

Congratulations To The Mendoza-Gonzalez Family

Photo of the Mendoza-Gonzalez family thanks to the Oamaru Mail
Congratulations to Catalina Mendoza-Gonzalez (Yr10) and her parents - Dario and Daniela - who were sworn in as New Zealand citizens at a special ceremony in the Waitaki District Council Chambers this week.

Otago Secondary Schools Netball Tournament

Back row L to R - Tyler Anderson, Piper Beach, Georgia Oakes, Chantelle Emery, Gemma Dowling
Front row - Roshni Crow, Brytnee Firman, Laura Preston, Molly Kay
Three netball teams traveled to Dunedin on Sunday for the Otago Secondary Schools Netball Tournament, competing in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior A grades.  The Senior A and Intermediate teams faced tough competition, both finishing in 12th place.  The Junior team had a very successful tournament, taking 3rd place in their grade.  They were unbeaten in their pool with wins against Mt Aspiring College, Bayfield High School and St Hilda's Collegiate which advanced them to the top 8 round on the Monday where they took wins over Dunstan High School and Wakatipu High School.  A loss to Taieri College (who eventually won the grade) saw them play for 3rd/4th place and the win against Mt Aspiring.  A great effort from the whole team and their coach Tiana Mihaere.  Congratulations to all of the girls who competed in the spirit of the College.

Kudos Take The Win

Kudos rocked the house at the Theatre Royal in Timaru on Friday evening at the Regional Finals of the Smokefree Rockquest.  Hitting the stage first, none of the other 13 bands could impress the judges as much as Kudos.  Along with the nod from the judges they won the hearts of fans, taking out the People's Choice Award.  They now need to make and submit a video to compete for a place in the finals in Auckland.  A big congratulations to Jack Sinclair (guitar), Kyle Andales (guitar and vocals) and Shaun Andales (bass) along with band mates Joe Martin (vocals), Shannon Martin (vocals) and Alex McCulloch (drums) - all the best in your quest to rock New Zealand!

Father Wayne

On Friday 6th June the College celebrated “Pentecost Sunday” Mass. It was also a Mass at which the school congratulated Father Wayne Healey who was celebrating his 40 year anniversary as a Catholic Priest.

The Pentecost Mass readings reminded all present that the Holy Spirit transforms lives through God’s power and that all of us are sent out as missionaries of Christ to build up his Church and further his kingdom of love, mercy and peace. It was noted that this very same ‘calling’ was what the young then Deacon Healey committed to back on the 7th June 1974, when the then Deacon Healey, the former farm accountant from Milton, was ordained by Bishop Kavanagh in the Dunedin Cathedral as a Roman Catholic Priest for the Diocese of Dunedin.

In Father Wayne’s case his life was forever changed that day in 1974 when he took his Holy Vows and committed his life to the service of God’s forever. Over those 40 years Father Wayne has faithfully ministered to parishioners in both Otago and Southland, as well as in North America and on a stint in Antarctica.

For the past eight years here at St Kevin’s, Father Wayne has been the College’s faithful Chaplain. He is also the Parish Priest for the St Patrick’s Parish of Oamaru and routinely ministers the sacraments to people all over North Otago. Father Wayne is also a member of the SKC Board of Trustees, St Joseph’s School Board, a Bishop’s consultant, a teacher, mentor, guide and wise counsellor to many. Father Wayne is also a member of every single committee in the Parish.

Outside of the church Father Wayne can be seen religiously patrolling the sports fields and courts of St Kevin’s and Oamaru proudly attired in his SKC jacket, freely dispensing advice and guidance to players and spectators alike. A keen rugby and tennis player in his own right, Father Wayne stills maintains a frenetic pace as he goes about fulfilling his many chores and obligations to the North Otago community.

Prior to the final blessing at the conclusion of Mass, deputy Head Girl Merekite Wahitapu speaking on behalf of all the students thanked Ft. Wayne for his supportive encouragement of pupils, his thoughtful Homilies and his loyalty and enthusiastic passion at the many sporting events that he regularly attends each weekend. Ft. Wayne was given a resounding standing applause prior to the administration of his blessing to conclude the Mass. Immediately following the recessional hymn “Shine Jesus, shine’ the whole school and staff congregated on the sanctuary surrounding Ft. Wayne in a unique photo opportunity. The framed photo was later presented to Ft. Wayne as a memento acknowledging this wonderful Pentecost celebration and his 40th anniversary.

Weekend Sporting Results

There were a mixed bag of results this past weekend.  Both the 1st XV and U16 rugby teams had great wins - 1st XV overpowered Mt Aspiring 31-15 with a fantastic effort under pressure and the U16's took a mammoth 86-12 win over Harlequins.  In football the boys played well against Timaru Boys Mambas with a 3-2 win, while the girls had a postponement for the blue team and a 3-2 loss for the red.  Netball had an assorted day - losses to Senior A, Senior B and Senior Red, a draw for Intermediate A, a win for Junior A and Junior Red, and with Intermediate B playing Junior B one had to come out the winner with the Juniors taking the honours.

Principal's Message

Kia Ora Kevinian's and Friends of the College

As I return to St Kevin's after an inspirational time establishing Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders (EREBB), I wish to formally thank Mr Ryan and our Senior Management Teams for stepping up in my absence. Your extra effort has allowed me to contribute in a very real way to the formation of this ground breaking international educational organisation.

Queen's Birthday Exeat Weekend provided a welcome midterm break and allowed me to recover from jet-lag and time zone challenges on my return from Nairobi. It was a pleasure for Mr Ryan and I to see our first rugby and netball teams win competition games on the Saturday. Player passion, quality coaching and community support, all came together on the day to highlight the importance of College sport to our mission. It forms the backbone of the "hidden curriculum" which teaches teamwork, tolerance and encourages healthy lifestyle choices. My thanks to our coaches at all levels for the invaluable work you are doing as you positively shape our young people's knowledge, skills and attitudes.

On Tuesday, our boy's teams headed off to the annual St Bede's inter-school which was hosted in Christchurch this year. Deserving a special mention was the close game between the two 1st XV rugby teams. A contentious last minute try to Bede's saw the whistle blow with the score at 24-22 to St Bede's.

On Wednesday, took the opportunity to show some images from my trip to the College at assembly. I am sure that the images from the slums of Nairobi challenged their thinking. On a more uplifting side, I am looking forward to the links that will be made in years to come with the formation of the EREBB.

Today at Mass we have celebrated with Fr Wayne the 40th anniversary of his ordination as a priest. This is a significant event and at the end of the celebration we captured a photograph of the current students with Father in the Chapel. As Principal, I am indebted to Fr Wayne for the support and spiritual guidance he provided both to me and the wider community and I ask you to keep him and his mission in your prayers.

God Bless
Paul Olsen, Principal

Wednesday Challege For Girls Rugby

It was an uphill battle for girls rugby this week with the SKC team letting WGHS run away on them during the first half in yesterday's game.  The girls came back in the second half with some strong defense and a try to Nicole Dowling but it wasn't enough to close the gap from the first half.  Better luck next time girls.

Southland U19 Girls Basketball Selection

Congratulations to Year 13 student Helena Graham who has been selected and named in the Southland U19 Girls Basketball team following an outstanding Southern Regional U19 Basketball tournament, held recently in Invercargill.  The Southland team will compete at the upcoming Basketball Nationals which will be held in Nelson in the July school holidays.  Helena will travel to either Gore or Invercargill to attend team training on Sundays before her chance to compete in front of national selectors.

St Bede's Interschool 2014

Yesterday three teams from the College traveled to St Bede's College in Christchurch for the hotly contested annual interschool.  While the scoreboards did not go the way of the boys much should be said of their tenacity and determination.  Mr Fowler and the 1st XV in particular had a hard fought battle with the home team and held the lead until a last minute try by St Bede's snatched victory in a tight 22-24 game.  Thank you to all of the parents and old boys and girls of the College who came out to support the teams - you were noticed and very much appreciated by the boys on the playing fields.

Rolling Plains Mini Cycling Tour

Keeping up with the tradition of successful cyclists at St Kevin's College, Regan Holland (Yr 11) competed in the "Rolling Plains Mini Cycling Tour" which began at Mt Somers and finished at Tinwald in Ashburton.  Cycling over three stages, the first was 35km where he placed 3rd, the second stage T/T 9km where he got 3rd and the final stage 24km where Regan came across the line in 2nd place.  This gave him a placing of 3rd overall for his age group.  Congratulations Regan!

Gymnastics Champion

Congratulations to Year 9 student Caitlin Middlemiss who successfully competed at the Christchurch School of Gymnastics Invitational Competition held over Queen's Birthday Weekend.  Up against 50 other gymnasts in her grade (Step 4) she placed 1st for the beam and 2nd for floor, vault and bars which gave her 1st overall!  Caitlin has been the Level 1, 2 and 3 South Island Champion for the past three years, and is travelling to Dunedin this weekend where she will compete up a grade to Step 5 with the hopes of qualifying for the Nationals at the end of this year.  Good luck Caitlin!

Sporting Results From The Weekend

It has been another successful weekend of sports for the College with the Boys 1st XV handing Gore High School a hefty defeat 59-8 in a dominant display.  Boys Football also came away with a 2-0 win over Timaru rivals Roncalli College.  On the netball courts there were wins to Senior A, Intermediate B, Junior A and Junior B, while Senior B, Senior Red, Intermediate A and Junior Red will have to look forward after losses this week.
